Somewhat similar to breadsticks, crackers and pretzels all combined into one - Taralli are round coils of dough made with flour, water, olive oil, and white wine. Taralli originated in southern Italy but are increasingly available all over Italy. Many variations are now available, the most common of which is the addition of fennel seeds to the classic Taralli, which gives them an anise flavor. Excellent with dips, cheeses or an ‘aperitivo’, the New York Times likens Taralli to the potato chips of America, a defining cultural snack.
